Bridge to close overnight for essential work

A major road bridge in York will be closed to traffic overnight one day next week for essential resurfacing, the council has said.

Lendal Bridge, which connects the city centre to York Station, would shut to traffic on Wednesday 12 August at 20:00 BST and open again at 06:00 BST the following day, according to City of York Council.

However, pedestrians and emergency services would still be able to cross the bridge as usual, a spokesperson said.

Buses would also continue to operate, but some routes would be diverted after 20:00 BST as a result of the road closure, they added.

During the closure, cyclists travelling towards the railway station from the city centre would be diverted along Blake Street, Davygate, Parliament Street, High Ousegate, Low Ousegate, Bridge Street, Micklegate, George Hudson Street and Rougier Street, the council spokesperson said.

Travelling in the opposite direction, cyclists would be diverted along Rougier Street, George Hudson Street, Micklegate, Bridge Street, Low Ousegate, Spurriergate, Coney Street and Lendal.

For all other vehicles, the diversion would be along Station Road, Queen Street, Blossom Street, A59 Holgate Road, Poppleton Road, A1176 Water End bridge, A19 Clifton and Bootham to the Gillygate junction.

The "no right turn" at the Lendal exit would also be suspended and drivers would be allowed to turn right, meaning Blue Badge holder access could be used at all times, the council confirmed.
