A man in his 60s has been hospitalised after being attacked by a number of masked men and stabbed.

The victim was attacked by a number of men, who were described as Asian and wearing masks, in St Saviours Road in Alum Rock, Birmingham, West Midlands Police said.

The incident, which took place at about 23:55 BST on Tuesday, happened days after a shooting in a nearby street which left a 16-year-old boy in a critical condition. Det Ch Insp Jim Mahon said he understood residents' concerns.

"There is currently nothing to suggest any connection with any other recent incidents in the area, but we are keeping an open mind about the motivation for what has happened," he said.

"Our priority right now is identifying those responsible and bringing them in to custody as quickly as possible, and officers have been working overnight to gather evidence and speak to potential witnesses."

He said officers would remain at the scene.

The man remains in hospital and the force has launched an investigation.
