Woman arrested for child neglect after baby dies

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect after a baby girl died.

Police officers received a call with concerns for the infant's welfare at a home on Platt Lane in Fallowfield, Manchester, on Thursday morning.

But despite the best efforts of medics the baby, whose age has not been disclosed, later died in hospital.

A 25-year-old woman was arrested earlier, Greater Manchester Police said.

Det Ch Insp Ian Wrench said: "This is a devastating incident and news of a police investigation will cause shock in the local community.

"Please be assured that we are keeping an open mind as we pursue several lines of enquiry, working closely with our partners to understand the full circumstances.

"We are doing everything possible to provide answers for this baby and their family."
