Staffing problems at Inverness Airport could disrupt flights for weeks, the site's operator has warned.

Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd (Hial) said it was experiencing issues in its air traffic control, and it was having to plan temporary closures of the airfield around flight schedules.

Some flights were affected over the bank holiday weekend.

Hial urged passengers to contact their airline for the latest flight information.

The airport building and its facilities remain open.

About one million passengers pass through the airport at Dalcross, near Inverness, every year.

It has connections to the Western Isles, Northern Isles, Gatwick, Heathrow, Manchester and Amsterdam.

The weekend's flights included arrivals of competitors taking part in the BBC's new The Celebrity Traitors series at Ardross Castle north of Inverness.

Hial has declined to provide information on what is behind the staffing problems.

A spokesperson said: "Staffing issues at Inverness Airport continue and will necessitate temporary closures over the coming weeks.

"We will try, wherever possible, to plan closures around our flight schedules - however this may not be possible and some flights may be affected."

They added: "We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause.

"Passengers should contact their airline directly for latest flight information."
