Beverley Community Lift helps people who live in rural areas get out and about

A community minibus service in Beverley is looking for volunteer drivers to help residents get out and about.

Beverley Community Lift helps older people, people with disabilities and residents living in rural and isolated areas to go shopping, attend appointments and enjoy days out.

The charity is running a taster session at Beverley Enterprise Centre on Saturday from 09:00 until 12:00 BST for anyone interested in getting involved.

Simon Home, who became a volunteer after attending a previous recruitment event, said: "It's very rewarding knowing how much [the residents] appreciate the service and the time the volunteers give."

'Incredibly important'

Home said volunteering was a great way to support his community.

"I would certainly recommend this to anyone who has some spare time," he added. "I have met some lovely people who find it difficult to get out and about."

The charity also runs East Riding of Yorkshire Council's Medibus service, which provides door-to-door transport for people attending non-emergency medical appointments.

Councillor Nick Coultish said: "Community transport is incredibly important in the East Riding as some residents rely on these services to get to hospital or doctors' appointments because they don't have their own transport.

"I'd encourage anyone with spare time and enthusiasm to go along to this taster day, find out what it's about and give minibus driving a go."

Volunteer drivers will need a D1 entitlement on their driving licence. Anyone interested can contact Beverley Community Lift for more information.
