Junction improvement works to 'ease traffic'

New safety measures have been installed at a junction as part of a £2.9m investment programme.

Durham County Council has completed an improvement scheme at St John's Road Junction in Meadowfield, which it said will ease traffic and boost safety.

The works included new signals to ease traffic turning right from the junction onto the A690 and new crossing facilities to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair and scooter users travelling to and from Meadowfield Industrial Estate.

Cabinet member for transport, Tim McGuinness, said the improvements offered "better connectivity" for the area and supported more sustainable travel choices.

The project was funded using an award from the Department for Transport's Safer Roads Fund and coordinated with The North East Mayoral Strategic Authority's Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP).

Areas where works overlapped with plans for Annand House and the Meadowfield Leisure Park and Ride facility were funded through the BSIP.

McGuinness said the project would "help communities and businesses feel more connected".

"These improvements are just one of a range of upgrades to the A690 that we have undertaken over the last year, and we'd like to thank residents for their patience while works have been carried out," he said.
