The Guernsey Recycling Group has applied to change the use of parts of its Longue Hougue site

Plans to use part of a site to store commercial and industrial waste have been submitted.

The Guernsey Recycling Group wants to change the use of part of its plant in Longue Hougue, St Sampson, to accept the waste along with acting as a "secondary small scale storage support site" to complement its other facilities.

In its plans submitted to the States, the group said it anticipated 18,000 tonnes of waste including aggregate, commercial and demolition waste would be received each year.

It added that the 5,574 sq m (59,998 sq ft) site, which is located north of the household waste and recycling centre, is currently used by the government for the temporary storage of waste cooling equipment.

Along with the commercial and industrial waste, the group said it also planned to accept soil and other mixed waste, but not asbestos.

"Under this proposal there would be no treatment or processing of waste; it would be sorted and stored temporarily, and transferred to an appropriate longer-term waste facility for final export, disposal, or recovery," the group said in its application.

"All processing of waste material would be undertaken on the current inert waste site immediately to the north of the area of land in question."

It added that the site had already been granted planning permission to temporarily stockpile inert waste on an 19,000 sq m (204,514 sq ft) area of the site to the north/east of the household waste and recycling centre.

The group said: "The remainder of the site is currently authorised for inert waste disposal and identified within the current Waste Management Plan as the main site for inert waste disposal in Guernsey."

The plans said the site would be used from 07:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday and 07:00 to 12:00 on Saturdays.

The States' planning website said the consultation phase of the application would end on 21 October.
