Scale Lane Bridge is a key crossing for pedestrians and cyclists over the River Hull

A footbridge over the River Hull is to be closed for a week for repairs, Hull City Council has announced.

In 2024, Scale Lane bridge's bespoke swing mechanism was identified as in need of repair.

Three of the bridge's wheels were removed, stripped down for examination, refurbished and are ready to be reinstalled.

Two of the wheels have already been put back into place. However, the bridge will need to be swung open from 13 to 19 May to allow the third wheel to be installed.

The bridge will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists during the works. A diversion will be in place via Millennium footbridge, the council said.

The bridge links Scale Lane with Tower Street and forms part of the Trans Pennine Trail to the ferry terminal.

According to the council, the structure's bespoke design means it is the only moving bridge in the world where people can stay on it as it opens.

Chris Jackson, executive director of regeneration and partnerships at Hull City Council, said: "We appreciate that this short-term closure will cause some disruption.

"However, the works have been carefully planned, so the bridge is only closed when necessary, and to ensure it remains open to pedestrians and cyclists during the upcoming closure of Drypool Bridge."

The council said the dates for the bridge closure were subject to change.
