Rihanna wearing a custom Maison Margiela by Glenn Martens gown was to let everyone know that scourers go in a refuse bin, Stevenage Borough Council says

The annual Met Gala in New York City is one of the biggest nights for the fashion industry, but for one council it was the chance to humorously highlight its rules about recycling and waste.

This year's theme at the event was "costume art", however Stevenage Borough Council said the creative designs were worn to promote which waste item goes in which household bin.

Kim Kardashian wore an orange bodice by British design duo Whitaker Malem to show that orange peel goes in the food waste caddy, according to the local authority.

Similarly Rihanna's silver gown from Maison Margiela by Glenn Martens was a reminder that scourers go in the refuse bin, it added.

On its social media channels, the council said: "It's clear that word has spread about our annual post and the *only* reason these outfits were worn was to be featured this year."

This was not the first time the local authority has used celebrity news to share important information.

In August it used Taylor Swift's engagement announcement to highlight that cardboard needs to go into the blue recycling container and after last year's Met Gala it said Gigi Hadid's dress was a reminder to put foil in the black container.
