Attempted murder arrest after crash on M4

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after two collisions on a busy motorway interchange.

Avon and Somerset Police said they were called to the meeting point of the M4 and M5 motorways at the Almondsbury Interchange, near Bristol, at approximately 21:00 BST on Wednesday.

Police said they were initially called to reports of a car colliding with the central reservation on the M5 northbound, before the driver got out of his vehicle and there was a further collision involving two vehicles on the M4.

"The drivers of the other cars involved are aiding us with our enquiries and are being treated as witnesses," police said.

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said:

"We were called at 21:05hrs on Wednesday 02 September to a road traffic collision near Almondsbury.

"We sent two double-crewed land ambulances, an operations officer, and a rapid response vehicle to the scene.

"We conveyed two patients by land ambulance to Southmead Hospital."

The man was also arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive through drink or drugs, police added.

Both carriageways were closed while emergency services attended - including the police helicopter - but it reopened at 22.30 BST.
