Dementia podcast shortlisted for national awards

A podcast helping people understand dementia has been shortlisted for two categories at this year's British Podcast Awards.

The Dementia Perspective, produced by Guernsey Alzheimer's Association and podcast host Ollie Guillou, is in the running for both the Health and Wellbeing Award and the Specialist Award, a category chosen by the judges.

The podcast was launched to help people learn more about brain health, dementia prevention and the realities of living with the condition.

It also aims to reach younger audiences who may not realise there are lifestyle changes that could reduce their risk later in life.

Julie Thompson, from the Guernsey Alzheimer's Association, said: "Our aim is really to connect with younger people and let them know there are things they can do that may help reduce their risk of dementia later in life."

Guillou said dementia was an issue people of all ages needed to understand.

He said: "One in three people of our generation are expected to develop dementia at some point in their lifetime.

"People really need to know what's going on so they can start making changes to their lifestyle now."

The series explores dementia research, prevention and brain health, while also sharing the experiences of people living with dementia and their carers.

Episodes have covered subjects including music, social connection and emerging research into smell training and dementia risk.

Thompson said the charity wanted people to know there was hope.

She said: "People with dementia can still live their best life, be part of their community and enjoy social interaction."

Guillou said he was "absolutely buzzing" when he learned the podcast had been shortlisted, adding: "It takes a huge amount of work to put together a series like this, so to be recognised is incredible."

The winners of the British Podcast Awards will be announced on 1 October.
