A former clothing store in Glasgow could become a boutique hotel under plans from a private investor.

The prominent Art Deco building on Sauchiehall Street site is known to many residents as the C&A building, before later being taken over by Irish retail chain Dunnes Stores.

It was built in 1929 but has been vacant and on the market since 2018.

The proposal includes a 132-bedroom hotel with the entrance on Cambridge Street and commercial use along its Sauchiehall Street frontage, with a bar, restaurant and three-storey extension with rooftop terrace.

Glasgow-based architects Haus are leading the design team.

Co-founder Murray Henderson said the site will hold "many memories for generations of Glaswegians."

Henderson added: "Our approach has been shaped by a respect for its architectural character, historic significance, and prominent role within the city centre.

"The proposals are founded on a conservation-led strategy that prioritises the retention, repair and adaptation of the existing building.

"Rather than replacing what is already here, we are seeking to give the building a sustainable new future that supports the ongoing renewal of Sauchiehall Street while celebrating its distinctive Art Deco heritage."

An information event will be held on Wednesday 17 June at Edward House, 199 Sauchiehall Street, directly opposite the former C&A building.

Henderson said that Haus are keen to engage with Glaswegians and hear their views on the future of the building ahead of a planning application being submitted later, likely in the summer.
