Neighbours kept up by 'horrendous' roadworks noise

People living in a suburb have said the "horrendous" noise of late-night roadworks is keeping them up at night.

Resurfacing works are taking place near the junction of Queens Drive and Dovedale Road in Mossley Hill, Liverpool.

Residents said workers started at 20:00 BST and did not finish until 04:00 for two days last week. Mother-of-one Sophie Hough, who lives a couple of doors away from the roadworks, said: "The noise has been horrendous."

A Liverpool City Council spokesperson said the authority understood the works had caused "disruption for nearby residents" but it was a "major route into the city" and so night-time works aimed to "reduce disruption to the wider road network".

Sophie Hough added: "I've got an 18-month-old daughter and am pregnant with my second, and it goes on until 04:00.

"They've been digging up the tarmac.

"You can hear the trucks reversing, the orange flashing lights have been going on.

"My daughter has been absolutely distraught.

"Most nights, we end up taking her out between 21:30 and 22:00, to get her asleep away from the home."

She said the council did tell residents the Friday before it started.

"But at that point, what did they expect me to do? Find alternative accommodation?"

Liberal Democrat councillor Richard Kemp said: "I was talking to a lady whose husband has quite severe dementia who needs routine – if she'd had more notice, she could have helped change that routine over a few days.

"A number of people along here have babies, it's very difficult to get them to sleep while the noise was going on."

He added: "If I thought it was essential that the work was done at night, I would have made a point at knocking at every door and telling people."

The city council spokesperson said: "We understand that the overnight resurfacing works on Queens Drive have caused disruption for nearby residents."

They explained the works were the final phase of a programme of improvements over recent months "to make the route safer and improve traffic flow for all road users".

"Because Queens Drive is a major route into the city and carries significant volumes of traffic, the decision was taken to carry out the resurfacing overnight to reduce disruption to the wider road network. During this stage of the project, the road needs to be closed to traffic."

They said letters had been delivered to homes "in advance of the works".

"We have taken measures to reduce noise and disturbance wherever possible, including switching off plant and machinery when not in use."

They thanks residents for their patience and understanding.
