A £17m leisure centre which suffered so many construction failings that it cost more to repair than it did to originally build is to have part of its roof replaced.

The DG1 facility in Dumfries opened in 2008 but was forced to close completely in 2014 for an overhaul which took nearly five years and cost £20m to complete.

Dumfries and Galloway Council has now said problems have been identified with its rotunda roof which would need to be replaced - probably next year - requiring the closure of its leisure pool with pirate ship and children's slides.

A council statement said: "DG1 is an important leisure facility for people across our region.

"We know customers will want to understand the work and what it means for their visits.

"The proposed work involves removing the existing roof and parapet, the low wall around its edge.

"These will be replaced with a new roofing system."

It said the next step would be to invite tenders for the work which was expected to start in the summer of 2027.

The leisure pool area will have to close for the work to be carried out

"The detailed programme will be agreed once a contractor has been appointed, so we will confirm the expected completion date at a later stage," it said.

"The leisure pool with the pirate ship and children's slides will close temporarily when work starts.

"Until then, it will remain open as normal.

"We aim to keep disruption to a minimum and keep the main pool, training pool, sports hall and fitness areas open wherever possible throughout the work."

The council has submitted a planning application for the work and said it would provide further updates in due course.
