Leisure centre nears completion after £15m revamp

A new learner pool and updated changing rooms are part of a £15m revamp of a leisure centre which is nearing completion.

The project at Droitwich Spa Leisure Centre began a year ago, after plans to rebuild the premises were scrapped in 2024 when estimated costs rose to £42m.

Wychavon District Council said the "finishing touches" were being made for the centre to fully reopen on 1 September.

It said residents would be able to take advantage of a free swimming offer for under 16s and people over 60, and free beginner lessons for adults and children.

The project includes an upgraded cafe, improved reception area and a fresh look for the surround around the main pool.

Nigel Grundy, managing director of Rivers Fitness which runs the centre, thanked customers for their patience and understanding while the work was carried out.

"We now can't wait to show them the finished centre," he said.

"The new learner pool is a fantastic addition and, together with the improvements throughout the building, I think people will be really impressed."

The leisure centre revamp is part of Wychavon's multi-million pound investment in Droitwich Spa, which includes the refurbishment of the town's lido, the council said.

It also includes a new pump track and skate park due to be completed later in September.

Wychavon council leader, Richard Morris. said: "Through this investment we're not only ensuring the people of Droitwich Spa have fantastic facilities to help them stay active at any age, but also preparing responsibly for the future.

"This will ensure we hand over modern, high-quality leisure facilities to the new South Worcestershire Council that are fit for the future."
