Free events to celebrate culture and heritage

Heritage sites across East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire will open their doors to visitors for free, as part of a festival to celebrate history and culture.

The events, which have been organised as part of Heritage Open Days, will take place from 11 to 20 September.

Some of the places that are rarely open to the public include a masonic hall, a World War Two air raid shelter, and a Grade II listed friary.

This year's festival theme is "Everyday Histories", and will focus on the people, places and stories that have shaped local communities.

Some of the highlights include:

• Guided tours of the World War Two battery at Beverley Butt Farm
• A look around Beverley and Barton-upon-Humber's Masonic Halls
• Discover the hidden history of Beverley Friary
• Historical walking tours around Goole, Cottingham and Spurn
• Get up close with Flamborough's Chalk Tower
• Talks, tours and music at Gainsborough Old Hall
• Hard Hat Tour of Greyfriars in Lincoln
• An Autumn Heritage Fair at Hammond House in Grimsby
• A chance to explore a wartime air raid shelter in Barton-upon-Humber
