Police close city centre areas over crime concerns

An area of Peterborough city centre has been closed to the public by police following reports of anti-social behaviour.

The closure affects part of Rivergate after an Open Space Closure Order was granted at Peterborough Magistrates' Court on Monday, following an application by Cambridgeshire Police.

The order covers the parking areas beneath Burlington House, Churchill House, Admiral House and Riverview in Viersen Platz.

It will remain in force for three months and prohibits access to everyone except residents of the flats covered by the order, employees of the management company and emergency service workers.

Anyone who breaches the order is committing a criminal offence and could face a fine, up to three months in prison, or both.

PC Dave Holland, from Cambridgeshire Police's Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "We applied for this order in response to residents' concerns about anti-social behaviour in these areas, particularly behaviour associated with drug use.

"To tackle the issue, we have worked closely with partner agencies and residents, and I hope this result reassures them that we are listening to their concerns and taking action to address them."
