Allan Pennock said six cars had come off Grinkle Lane since 2023

It is "only a matter of time" before someone is seriously injured on a dangerous bend, a resident has warned.

Allan Pennock said the verge on a stretch of Grinkle Lane, in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, dropped away years ago and six cars had gone over the edge of it since 2023.

The 76-year-old said he contacted the council after the first car went over, but little had been done to fix it.

A spokesperson from Redcar and Cleveland Council said daily inspections were carried out at the site and it was the process of appointing a contractor for a "bank stabilisation scheme".

Pennock said there was a field on the side of the road which slopes down to a river and there was "nothing to stop" someone going over the edge.

"Fortunately there have been no fatalities, but it's only a matter of time before some poor devil goes over the top and finishes up rolling to the bottom and not coming back out again," he said.

Allan Pennock said he was worried someone would get "seriously injured"

Pennock said the traffic was "virtually constant" on the road, with buses and farm traffic which often meant people had to reverse back up the blind bend, or reverse down into the dip itself.

"It's just an accident waiting to happen," he said

"Somebody's going to get seriously injured."

Redcar and Cleveland Council said it hoped to start work on the road in the new year

The spokesperson for the council said it aimed to start work on the road in the new year.

"The council is aware of the issue and is currently in the process of appointing one of the Framework Contractors to deliver a bank stabilisation scheme at this location," they said.

"A consultant was previously appointed to undertake an independent assessment and the corresponding recommendations following this assessment were implemented."
