New crossing to be installed near school
BBCWork to install a road crossing to improve safety and accessibility for children near a junior school in Stapleford is set to begin.
Broxtowe Borough Council said the new safety measures will make journeys around Albany Junior School safer for pupils, parents and other members of the public.
The new puffin crossing - a traffic light-controlled road crossing that uses smart sensors to detect pedestrians - will be installed in Pasture Road alongside two safer crossing points during the project.
Ian Jowett, chair of Stapleford Towns Fund which has paid for the work, said the scheme would improve safety on what is a "particularly busy and challenging section of road".
The 12-week project will see the enlargement of the existing central crossing island at the junction between Pasture Road and Hickings Lane.
Resurfacing work for the paths along the road will also take place.
The council said these improvements would help to "slow traffic speeds along the road and improve pedestrian connections" in the area.
Jowett said: "We're so pleased work can now finally start to improve safety on this particularly busy and challenging section of road.
"It's something we know local people have wanted for a long time and we're pleased to be able to fund it through the Stapleford Towns Fund's Active Travel project."
Temporary traffic lights will be in place while the work, which is due to start on Tuesday, is being carried out.
