Town centre fully reopened after project milestone
George Carden/BBCA town centre in East Sussex has a "new, modern feel" after the latest phase of a construction project has been completed.
Several areas of Eastbourne town centre have been pedestrianised as part of plans to create a 0.6 mile (0.96km) walkable route from Eastbourne station to the seafront.
Terminus Road between Bankers' Corner and Marks & Spencer has been pedestrianised, alongside Terminus Road between Grand Parade and Seaside Road, known as the Victoria Place phase.
Peter Griffiths, East Sussex County Council's lead member for transport and environment, admits these works have come with "their difficulties" but have created a "vastly improved town centre".
He said: "I was delighted to see the town centre fully reopened with a new, modern feel.
"This makes it easier and safer for people to access the town centre, will help encourage more visitors to Eastbourne, and benefit the local economy."
Last October, businesses in Eastbourne told the BBC trade was being impacted by the pedestrianisation schemes taking place.
Griffiths has acknowledged the "inevitable disruption over an extended period of time" but has pointed to the result being a better Eastbourne.
Colin Swansborough, cabinet member for enterprise at Eastbourne Borough Council thanked businesses for their "patience" during this "important project".
He said: "I'm pleased that we were able to support those that experienced disruption by providing access to business rate relief."
