Several roads that were closed after a double decker bus struck a building in New Mills have re-opened.

The bus crashed into a building at the junction of Union Road and Market Street at 17:20 GMT on Saturday, Derbyshire Police said. A number of people suffered minor injuries and were treated by paramedics at the scene, it added.

A cordon was put in place on Saturday due to concerns over a "potential gas leak", but gas distribution company Cadent confirmed on Sunday it had isolated the supply to a damaged pipe.

In an update on Sunday, police said Union Road, Market Street as well as St Mary's Road had reopened and the building affected had been declared safe by a structural engineer.

The force also confirmed the bus - which was running on the 358 route between Hayfield and Stockport - had been recovered.

Elliott Nelson, network director for gas emergency service Cadent, said: "We were called out yesterday to support the emergency service response to an incident involving damage to a gas service pipe.

"The service pipe is the pipe which carries gas into a building from the bigger main in the road.

"Our priority in an incident like this is to make sure everything associated with gas is made safe, which we have been able to do by isolating gas supply to just this damaged pipe.

"Our teams have checked all gas assets in the vicinity and there is no additional impact."

A spokesperson for Transport for Greater Manchester said it was working with the police and the operator to "understand the exact circumstances" of the crash.

"Our thoughts are with those who were injured and we wish them a speedy recovery," the spokesperson added.
