Police search land for woman murdered in 1995

Police are excavating an area of land in South Yorkshire as they search for the body of a woman who was murdered more than 30 years ago.

Teresa Shephard, 26, from Basegreen in Sheffield, went missing in June 1995 and although Worksop man Peter Turner was jailed for her murder, her body has never been found.

South Yorkshire Police said detectives were searching a site off Piper Lane in Aston, Rotherham, and expected to be there for the next few days.

A spokesperson said the victim's family were aware and would be kept up to date with the investigation.

A police cordon was put in place around the site.

Turner, formerly of Doncaster Road in Worksop, was convicted of murder in 1996 and sentenced to life in prison.

Teresa was last seen by her grandmother when she went to pick up washing at the beginning of June 1995.

On the day she disappeared, she had told friends she was catching a tram to Crystal Peaks shopping centre to meet a man for a picnic in nearby fields, but was not seen again.
