Three islanders receive King's Birthday Honours

Three people in Jersey have been included in the King's Birthday Honours List.

The list recognises outstanding achievements and public service across the UK.

Two islanders have been awarded the MBE: Jason Wyse in recognition of his services to the community as CEO of addiction charity Silkworth, and Mike Haden for services to the community as chairman of Hands Around the World Jersey.

Dawn Tinley was awarded a BEM for services to people with learning disabilities in Jersey.

Tinley, from Jersey Mencap, said she was "thrilled" with the nomination, adding: "I was halfway through my pilates class" when she got the call.

She said: "I was just totally gobsmacked when I had a call from the lieutenant governor telling me I had been given this award.

"My work really has involved with learning disabilities to get better things in their life, to help them get their homes and just live in part of the community and be appreciated by the community as well."

Haden is chair of Hands Around the World Jersey, which supports disadvantaged children and young people.

"Over the past 16 years we've been going down to Rwanda," he said. "We've taken over 60 Jersey volunteers, as well to take part in maybe some minor building works, renovations in classrooms, painting classrooms, teaching."

He said it had been "a fantastic experience".

Wyse, head of addiction charity Silkworth, said he was "overwhelmed" and "totally shocked" with the honour.

"I got a call from the lieutenant governor. I thought he was calling me regarding an event we're having later in the year. And then he gave me the news, which I was gobsmacked at."

He said the charity works to try and "fill gaps" and ensure people get the right support and guidance around addiction.

"The stigma is starting to shift," he said. "Which is great because when I started 17 years ago the stigma was huge and getting people to reach out was quite hard."
