Couple still divided by football after 60 years
St Joseph's HospiceA couple married for 60 years have said the only time they ever disagree with each other is when Liverpool play Everton.
Pat and Dave Hughes, who both live at St Joseph's Hospice in Thornton, Sefton, celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary on Friday, and said they were congratulated by every member of staff.
The couple, who share three children, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, also received a personal message from the King and Queen Camilla.
Pat said: "We've got different personalities, but they gel together. I think that's why it's lasted so long."
The pair have built their life together, bonding over a shared love of family, laughter, and, of course, football.
"We agree on lots of things and we do lots of things together. There are lots of things we disagree on – and that's fine," Pat said.
"One thing we disagree on is Liverpool and Everton. On derby day, that's one day we are never in agreement."
They marked their diamond wedding anniversary at St Joseph's Hospice, where Dave has been treated.
"Every member of staff has congratulated us, and the way they've been looking after us today has been amazing," Pat said.
"They haven't just looked after Dave, they've looked after me as well."
