Nesting seagulls delay reopening of library

The reopening of a library has been delayed after nesting seagulls delayed building work.

Poole Library and Customer Service Hub in Poole's Dolphin Centre in Dorset has been closed from Monday to Friday since 26 August while work continues to remove Raac concrete from the building.

But, following the discovery of nesting gulls, workers have been unable to access parts the roof and the construction program has been delayed.

The library is now expected to reopen on Monday 19 October, three weeks later than planned.

All wild birds, their nests and eggs are legally protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

The presence of the gulls has also disrupted the town's Citizen's Advice Bureau, which is normally based at the library but has been operating out of the United Reformed Church, near the former Poole Civic Centre.

Culture councillor Andy Martin apologised for the inconvenience, adding: "Unfortunately, circumstances outside of our control have delayed the roof repair programme and contractors now require additional time to complete this phase of the works safely.

"I would like to thank residents for their continued patience while these essential repairs are carried out."

Poole Library continues to open on Saturdays from 09:00 to 17:00 BST. Customers can also return items using the returns box outside the entrance.

Nearby Hamworthy, Oakdale, Parkstone, Branksome and Broadstone libraries remain open as normal.
