Man was covered in blood after killing partner, murder trial told

A man was found covered in blood hours after he allegedly killed his partner, a court has heard.

Alexander Brennan, 54, denies murdering Brodie MacGregor, 23, in her flat in Glasgow's Springburn on 26 August 2024.

The trial at the High Court in Glasgow heard Brennan was wearing a bloodstained jumper and had injuries to his hands and face on the day of the suspected murder.

Fragments of glass and blood were also found on clothing belonging to MacGregor.

Witness Tina Marie Hatton told the court that she knew Brennan through her then partner Robert McCallum and had met MacGregor previously.

She stated on the day of the suspected murder, she returned home to her property in Camelon, Falkirk, to find Brennan inside.

Hatton, 46, said he was wearing a hooded jumper with blood all over it and she cleaned him up.

She told the court she took Brennan's jumper but did not wash it.

The witness added he had injuries to his hands and above his eyebrow.

When she asked what was going on Brennan replied that he "couldn't stop" and he was "done".

Hatton said she would have phoned the police if she knew who he "attacked".

The murder charge claims Brennan punched and slapped MacGregor.

It goes on to state he also repeatedly struck her on the head and body with glass bottles and hit her with a microwave plate.

Police Scotland Det Insp Ashley Gemmell, 42, told the court she seized the bloodstained jumper during inquiries to locate Brennan on 28 August.

She arrested Brennan, who had "scratches" to his face and forehead, at an associate's home in Stirling.

Forensic scientist Joanne Carter analysed blood found in the property and on the recovered clothing.

MacGregor's blood was stated to have been found on the front door handle, the frame of the toilet door as well as the rim of the bath and hot sink tap.

Further blood was discovered on a microwave plate in the living room, a radiator, two chairs, the living room wall and ceiling as well as broken glass bottles on the floor.

The court heard earlier that a pair of jeans had been recovered from a clothing bin near MacGregor's home.

Blood was found on the jeans as well as the jumper taken from Hatton's home.

Another forensic scientist, Louise Sonstebo, told jurors there were 60 fragments of glass from a blood stained vest top recovered from MacGregor.

Eight fragments were stated to have come from a bottle of Buckfast while one is alleged to have been from a bottle of Smirnoff vodka.

Further fragments were claimed to have been found on another top and a pair of MacGregor's leggings.

A total of 11 fragments of glass were found on the jumper recovered from Hatton's home - three from a bottle of Buckfast and one from a bottle of Smirnoff.

These along with a fragment from a Magnum bottle were found on the jeans recovered from the clothing bin.

Brennan denies all the charges. The trial, before Lord Scott, continues.
