Two people were taken to hospital as a fire destroyed a restaurant.

Ten crews from Cleveland Fire Brigade were called to Antalya Shawarma in Linthorpe Road in Middlesbrough at about 10:45 BST on Saturday.

Cleveland Police closed the road in both directions between Gresham Road and Princes Road due to the blaze, adding the closure would remain until the building could be made structurally safe.

The owners of Antalya Shawarma said in a post on Facebook "with a heavy heart" their restaurant and takeaway was destroyed, adding "everything we built is gone".

The force said fire investigators were working to determine the cause of the blaze, which damaged business premises either side of the restaurant.

The North East Ambulance Service said two people had been taken to Middlesbrough's James Cook University Hospital for further treatment.

The owners of the restaurant said "we don't have answers yet about what's next" and thanked customers "for all the love and support over the years".
