Plans to install a 30m (98ft) tall 5G mast in a village near York have been approved.

It will replace an existing 28.6m (94ft) mast at Broad Lane in Nether Poppleton, with the new lattice structure featuring six antennas and two dishes.

Telecommunications firm Cornerstone said the mast would support a "generational leap in mobile technology" and there was no cause for concern about potential health effects.

City of York Council planning officers ruled the installation would replace the similar mast already at the site and would therefore not harm the appearance of the area or its surroundings.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, no objections were lodged against the plans.

The firm, which manages 20,000 sites across the country, said its plans came after its commercial relationship with telecommunications provider O2-Virgin Media had changed.

Proposals added the changes allowed it to act more independently and work with other companies to deploy mobile infrastructure.

The previous mast supported 2G, 3G and 4G but the proposed mast would improve those connectivity services and provide 5G, according to the firm.
