Dyfed-Powys Police said officers received reports of a fire at Trimsaran rugby club on Saturday afternoon
An 11-year-old boy suffered serious injuries during the incident at Trimsaran rugby club

A 13-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and arson after a fire at a rugby club.

An 11-year-old boy suffered serious injuries during the incident at Trimsaran rugby club in Carmarthenshire on Saturday and is currently in a stable condition at Morriston Hospital.

Dyfed Powys-Police said officers received reports of a fire at around 18:15 BST.

The force said: "A container was allegedly set alight deliberately causing extensive damage to the container and its contents."

In a post on Facebook, the club said: "The [11-year-old] boy was trapped inside and only got out due to the heroism of some of our club members."

Dyfed Powys Police said the 13-year-old had been released on conditional bail while its investigation was continuing.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Llanelli, Pontyates and Kidwelly fire stations responded to a fire involving one shipping container used for storage at the rugby club.

It added the fire was believed to have been started deliberately and had spread to a neighbouring property, affecting its roof space.

Mari Arthur says the community is "so proud" of the people who rescued the boy

Mari Arthur, community councillor for Trimsaran, said the incident was "shocking".

She added the community was "so proud of the people that came to the rescue of the little boy".

"I think that this just goes to show that when anyone is in need that the community does come to help," she said.

It's quiet here at Trimsaran rugby club, with a few children on their bikes making the most of the half-term heatwave.

But the shock and sadness of what happened here over the weekend is clear, with some telling me of the braveness of members who put themselves in harm's way to get the little boy out of the container.

I was shown the distance the members would have had to run to reach the container - the length of the rugby pitch, and one running through a bush of brambles to get to him.

Trimsaran is an ex-coal mining community with a strong rugby legacy.
