Late-night fireworks show 'no regard' for locals

People who set off fireworks late at night in part of Lancashire are being warned they face "serious consequences" from police.

Pendle Borough Council is urging residents to act in a "responsible and considerate manner" after complaints about fireworks, noisy vehicles and anti-social driving.

Residents have been calling for stronger action after a petition in the borough attracted thousands of names.

The authority said it is working with Lancashire Constabulary and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service to tackle late-night fireworks in Nelson and surrounding areas.

Council leader, councillor Asjad Mahmood, said: "Fireworks are being set off in neighbourhoods at all times of the day and night with absolutely no regard for the community, and this is not acceptable."

"As well as disturbing people's sleep, fireworks can cause significant anxiety for vulnerable residents, pets and wildlife, and they can pose a serious fire risk, including wildfires," he said.

"We recognise the significant impact that fireworks can have on residents' quality of life and we're appealing for people to be considerate of others."

It is illegal to set off fireworks between the hours of 23:00 and 07:00, except on Bonfire Night, Diwali, New Year and Chinese New Year.

Mahmood said information from residents about who is setting off fireworks, and where incidents are taking place "is vital".

Insp Rob Grey, of the Pendle and Ribble Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team, added: "We take a zero-tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour, and those involved will face serious consequences.

"I urge members of the public to report any concerns to us, and we will continue to proactively respond".
