City bus station to close for three weeks
Newcastle City CouncilA city centre bus station is set to close for three weeks to allow road works to take place.
Newcastle's Eldon Square Bus Station will close from 10-29 June and services will be diverted to temporary stops elsewhere in the city centre.
The work will see the road resurfaced, new road markings painted, and changes made to drainage and guardrails, while the passenger information displays will be upgraded.
Newcastle City Council's assistant director of transport Pamela Holmes said the local authority had worked with bus operator Nexus to agree "appropriate arrangements for all affected services".
"As many passengers will be aware, the bus station is in need of improvements, including resurfacing to tackle potholes and damage to the road surface that has developed over time," she said.
"Unfortunately, it is not possible to carry out these works while the bus station remains in use and passengers will need to use alternative temporary stops while the bus station is closed."
Bus diversions
Nexus's head of customer service operations John Souter said the work would ensure the station could be "used for many years to come".
Alternative stops have been set up on Newgate Street, while some services will be diverted to Haymarket Bus Station and stops on Percy Street.
After the works to Eldon Square Bus Station are finished, work will begin to upgrade the traffic lights and pedestrian crossings at the Gallowgate and Percy Street junction, where preliminary works are currently taking place.
Temporary traffic lights will be used while the main signals are upgraded and some lane closures may be required.
The road works are being funded by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority.
