A woman who has dedicated 30 years of her working life to animal welfare in Guernsey has been recognised for her achievement.

Yvonne Chauvel, a supervisor at the GSCPA, has won charity employee of the year at the National Animal Welfare Awards.

Her work has included call-outs to major incidents such as the Sea Empress disaster, as well as rescuing turtles and seals.

Chauvel told BBC Radio Guernsey: "To get an award for something you are so passionate about has just been amazing. I can't tell you in words how it's felt."

'An inspiration'

Presented by media personality Pete Wicks, the award was among three which collectively garnered 10,000 nominations from across the UK, Ireland and islands, the charity said.

Chauvel, who attended with her niece, added: "I couldn't quite believe it was happening to me. I perhaps was not aware of how big it was.

"Everyone there cared for creatures great and small, and to be in that atmosphere was just amazing."

Chauvel said she was also pleased to meet Pete Wicks, with the pair sharing a "hug and a kiss".

GSPCA manager Steve Byrne said: "Yvonne is simply an inspiration to us all.

"Her dedication to animal welfare spans decades, from responding to major incidents like the Sea Empress disaster to her everyday commitment here at the GSPCA.

"She has given so much of her life to helping animals and supporting people—coaching, mentoring, and guiding countless staff, volunteers, and placements over the years."

Chauvel, 78, has also "dedicated herself to mentoring, teaching, and supporting others", the GSPCA said.

Yvonne was also a finalist in 2014, the charity said.

It described Chauvel's achievement as a "celebration for the entire GSPCA community and the wider animal welfare sector".

It added: "Her story reminds us all of the difference one dedicated individual can make—and the lifelong impact of compassion, commitment, and care.

The 2026 Petplan and Association of Dogs and Cats Homes Animal Charity Awards were held in Telford.
