The creator of Downton Abbey has called the newly released Lego version of the fictional home "the greatest compliment".

Inspired by Highclere Castle in Hampshire, the filming location for the period drama, the 4,711-piece build spans the grand dining room, main hall and Mr Carson's office and servants' hall.

Also included are 13 minifigures representing the Season 6 household, including The Dowager Countess and Lady Mary.

Julian Fellowes, Downton Abbey's writer and executive producer said: "I shall certainly buy myself a set."

Lego said the building set had been designed for adult fans and it "invites builders to answer the bell, cross the threshold, and step into a world of sweeping architecture and secrets tucked behind every door".

The Countess of Carnarvon said working with Lego had been "a delight".

"Lego were very kind and humoured me as I really wanted a cedar tree, a bench, and a Labrador," she said.

Lady Carnarvon said building with Lego bricks would always reminded her of "rosy hued years of my childhood".

The Lego building measures over 12 inches (30 cm) high, 17.5 inches (44 cm) wide and 6.5 inches (16 cm) deep.

The real building was transformed into the present day Highclere Castle in 1842 by Sir Charles Barry, who also designed the Houses of Parliament.

Fellows said it had been chosen for the TV series out of about 4,000 other houses.

"Although Highclere is obviously a very large house, it nevertheless is a very straightforward one," he said.

Speaking describing the new plastic version, Fellows said he was "very flattered", as Lego was "an institution".

"I take it as the greatest compliment," he added.
