Bollards have been put up in Ipswich town centre to stop cars from driving down pedestrian areas

Bollards are being installed in Ipswich town centre to help keep pedestrianised areas free of vehicles.

The council said some drivers were creating "potential hazards" by using the streets during restricted hours, and the new bollards would be locked in place between 10:30 and 16:30 from Monday 12 October.

The areas covered included Carr Street, Tower Street, the western section of Westgate Street and the junction of Princes Street and King Street.

Bollards will also control access to Queen Street, where vehicles are currently permitted between 16:30 and 10:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays.

Councillor Neil MacDonald, leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said: "The town centre's pedestrianised streets should be safe and welcoming places for people to walk, shop and spend time.

"Unfortunately, some drivers continue to ignore the existing restrictions and drive through the town centre when vehicles are prohibited.

"These bollards are a practical way of making the existing restrictions work. Businesses will still be able to receive deliveries during the permitted times and emergency access will be maintained, but during the day our pedestrianised streets should be just that: pedestrianised."

ANPR cameras, installed on Upper Brook Street, will help enforce vehicle restrictions.
