Debris cleared from race day burst pipe flood

Gateshead CouncilMore than 200 tonnes of debris has been cleared from a road which flooded when a large water pipe burst, disrupting traffic heading to the Great North Run.
Northumbrian Water said there was a "heavy burst on a water main" on the grass bank at the side of Askew Road in Gateshead, which saw mud, rocks and water cascade down to the roundabout under the southern approach to the A189 Redheugh Bridge on Sunday.
The road was shut just as thousands of people were making their way to the annual half-marathon that crosses the nearby Tyne Bridge.
A clean-up operation led to Askew Road reopening on Monday evening, however a partial lane closure remains in place on the south side of the roundabout.
Gateshead Council said further repairs would continue over the next few days.
