Spiders nightclub inspires play at Hull Truck
Hull Truck TheatreThe writer of a new play set in a well known alternative nightclub says she was inspired by her own experiences of partying there when she was younger.
Spiders, which has been written by Martha Godber, follows two teenagers as they navigate their friendship against the backdrop of Spiders Nightclub in Hull.
The production will open at Hull Truck Theatre on 28 January 2027 until 13 February.
Godber said: "Spiders Nightclub such an iconic place - I really don't think there is anywhere else like it. I've had so many memorable nights there, and I really wanted to celebrate that through this piece of work."
The club opened in 1979, and describes itself as "Hull's original indie-vidual nightclub".
It became widely known for serving pangalactic gargle blaster cocktails along with toasted crumpets and oven chips.
Godber said the play initially came about during lockdown, when she started to write down memories and experiences of nights out at the club.
She also admitted there was a "darker side" to the play.
"I don't want to give too much away, but as much as it's about the club, it's primarily about the friendship between the girls", she added.
Godber will also be starring in the show, playing the character of Meg.

'Super proud'
She said performing at Hull Truck Theatre feels like a "really big moment" for her.
"It's my city that I grew up in and it's a play about my city and characters from there, especially women."
John Godber, Martha's father, became the artistic director of Hull Truck Theatre in 1984, and held the role for 26 years.
Godber said: "[My dad] is super proud. I think it's such a special feeling that I'm able to do it, and also in my own right.
"I can put something out there that I'm super proud of and go, this is my voice, and it's nothing to do with John Godber.
"But of course there's no point denying or also hiding that family connection, because it's there. But it feels really special, but also very weird, because I grew up going to that theatre."
