A new swimming pool is set to open after being delayed by the discovery of medieval ruins.

The multimillion-pound facility at Abbey Fields in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, features two indoor swimming pools as well as an enlarged changing village and a conservatory-style cafe.

Contractors faced a six-month delay in 2023 after ceramics and at least five buildings, some dating back to the 13th Century, were found at the site.

Now completed, it will open to the public on 11 July, Warwick District Council has said.

The ground is uneven and dusty, with trenches revealing rectangular room-like structures. Pieces of modern piping run across the top of the dig, contrasting with the historic remains below, and loose stones and rubble are scattered throughout the area.

Alongside the main training pool, the additional family pool has a movable floor to accommodate a variety of water-based sessions, as well as enhanced access for disabled swimmers, who can get into the water using pool-pod lift technology.

Councillor Jim Sinnott said: "Having recently been shown round the new building and having seen the fantastic features and spec, I really can't wait to see the new pools finally open for all in our community to enjoy."
