Unwanted garages to be turned into homes and parking

Unwanted garages will be turned into housing, extra parking and EV charging facilities after a council approved new plans.

Milton Keynes City Council said it would continue investing in garages "valued by residents", while redeveloping "derelict and vandalised" sites.

The authority said work would begin immediately to identify relevant locations and develop proposals for alternative uses.

Deputy council leader Lauren Townsend said: "This strategy is about making better use of land that has the potential to deliver real benefits for local people."

The council said its new five-year strategy for its portfolio of more than 2,000 garages and carports could reduce maintenance costs, create useful community facilities and improve run-down areas.

Townsend said: "By investing in garages that residents want to use and reimagining sites that aren't wanted, we can create more parking options, unlock spaces for new homes and improve neighbourhoods."
