Man who killed pedestrian in hit-and-run jailed

A man has been jailed for killing a pedestrian with a stolen vehicle in a hit-and-run crash in Birmingham.

Tyrone Clarke, 51, struck a man in his 70s on Highters Heath Lane on 4 November, West Midlands Police said.

Clarke, from Gisborne Gardens in Evesham, Worcestershire, admitted causing death by dangerous driving, causing death by driving a vehicle whilst uninsured and handling stolen goods.

He was jailed for six years and nine months at Birmingham Crown Court and disqualified from driving for more than 10 years.

Clarke will also have to take an extended test before being allowed to drive again.

The vehicle, which was stolen earlier on 4 November, did not stop after hitting the pedestrian and was found about half a mile away badly damaged, the force said.

Clarke abandoned the vehicle before walking away and calling a taxi to take him home to Evesham, police said.

Det Sgt Julie Lyman said: "Clarke callously left the scene and calmly called a taxi to collect him, clearly thinking he would be able to get away with what he'd done."

He was not guilty of a charge of theft of motor vehicle.
