Work begins on 40 'affordable, secure' homes
Karolina AndreasovaWork to build 40 affordable homes for people with a connection to a local area has started.
The South Molton Community Land Trust (CLT), which was formed by residents in the Devon town to create "affordable, secure homes for people with a strong connection to the area", said the homes would be built just off Nadder Lane.
A total of 14 one-bedrooms, 14 two-bedroom, 10 three-bedroom and two four-bedroom properties will be for social rent, CLT said, and were being built in partnership with local housing association Aster Group.
Val Schenn, from CLT, said it was "the first project of its kind" for the area and it paved the way "for future projects by the community for the community".
She said: "Empowering the local community to lead the CLT development process ensures that these new homes will permanently provide secure, long-term sustainable, and energy-efficient homes, with affordable social rents for those on low incomes.
"This particular community-driven approach by the South Molton CLT provides those with a 10-year connection to the town the opportunity to keep close to their family, local jobs, key workers and community area support teams and networks, aiming to keep the community together."
CLT said the outdoor space would include a play area, football pitch, wildflower meadow, aquatic planting and orchard trees.
'Community-led housing'
The community company said funding would come from Homes England, the government's housing agency's Affordable Housing Programme.
It said those interested in buying one of the homes needed a local connection and an identified housing need - and to be registered with Devon Home Choice.
Aster Group CIO Amanda Williams said Devon was "truly embracing the CLT movement" by "clearly recognising the value of a community-led housing model that delivers affordable homes in an area significantly affected by rising rental and house prices".
CLT said the new homes were expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
