The petition to install PFAS filters in schools and public buildings has surpassed 1,000 signatures

A petition calling for water and air filters which remove forever chemicals to be installed in schools and public buildings has reached more than 1,000 signatures.

Foam containing PFAS was used on the fire training ground at the airport in the 1990s and leaked into nearby private borehole water supplies.

Paul Le Claire, who put forward the petition, said water tests for PFAS should be carried out routinely in schools with regular monitoring and "proper maintenance" - and should be funded by Ports of Jersey or the government.

The government will need to respond to the petition within a week. If it reaches 5,000 signatures, it will be considered for debate by the States Assembly.

Jersey Water previously said its drinking water quality was compliant with regulations and the independent scientific panel, which was set up in 2023 to advise on PFAS, said levels in Jersey drinking water were lower than many places in the world.
