A judge acknowledged that "feelings will be running high" as two men appeared in court charged with murder after a crash resulted in the death of two teenagers.

Jaydon Bowyer, 19, and Tashay Canoville, 16, the driver and passenger of a motorbike, were pronounced dead following a collision with a BMW in Aberthaw Road, Newport, in the early hours of Thursday.

On Tuesday, Terell Case, 18, of Sandpiper Way, Duffryn, Newport, and Joshua Williams, 34, of no fixed abode, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court charged with murder.

Before the hearing started, Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke said that "feelings will be running very high", asking those in the court's public gallery to "try to restrain your reaction".

In a short hearing lasting less than 10 minutes, both defendants spoke only to confirm their name, address and date of birth.

No pleas were entered, and the defendants will next appear in court on 22 June.

More than 30 people were sat in a packed public gallery for the court hearing, including members of Bowyer and Canoville's families.

Police thanked the local community for their support

Det Supt Steven Maloney said: "Both Jaydon and Tashay's families are being supported by specialist officers and our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.

"We would like to thank the community for their support while we continue to investigate fully the circumstances of these tragic deaths."

Two women aged 24 and 40 from Newport, who had earlier been arrested on suspicion of murder, have since been released without charge.
