Oxford United has awarded a young goalkeeper who died the Women's Young Player of the Year and named the award in her memory.

Oxford United academy player Amelia Aplin had been playing in a Junior Premier League game against Fulham at the Oxford training ground in Horspath on 7 March when she collapsed.

Tributes across the football world poured in for the 15-year-old, who was described as a player with "immense promise" by Oxford United legend Peter Rhoades-Brown.

Amelia's family received the award at the club's end of season ceremony, before it was announced that the award would be known as the Amelia Aplin Women's Young Player of the Year Award.

Oxford United's Gemma Sims previously said Amelia's death had been "devastating for everybody" at the club.

In the weeks after her death Sims, who is Oxford Women's general manager, said: "Everyone is still in shock and obviously the staff and the players who were present on the day are finding it tough.

"It's obviously been devastating for everybody at the club, but something like this doesn't just hit the whole club, it's hit the wider community as well."

Matt Bloomfield, who appeared visibly emotional during a press conference on 10 March, said: "It's devastatingly sad news - we are all heartbroken for Amelia's family and our thoughts and prayers go out to them.

"Amelia will live in our hearts forever."
