Police have arrested two people on suspicion of arson after a flat fire which is believed to have started when a barbecue was lit on furniture.

Derbyshire Police said officers were called to reports of a fire in Burns Street, Ilkeston, at 16:40 BST on Thursday.

A man and a woman, both in their 30s, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of arson. They both remain in custody.

The woman who was arrested was taken to hospital and treated for injuries which are not thought to be serious, the force said.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Heanor and Ilkeston stations, supported by Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service's Eastwood and Highfields stations, attended the incident.

On arrival, they found the building well alight, with smoke billowing out of the windows.

Final fire crews left the scene at 19:15 BST and a joint police and fire investigation was launched.

The fire service said they believe the cause to most likely be the "deliberate ignition of a barbecue on soft furnishings".
