Man guilty of fatal stab attack jailed for 24 years

A man who stabbed a 20-year-old to death in a fight on a street in Huddersfield has been jailed for 24 years.

Luke Belbin, 25, attacked Kyrell Fleary-Gayle on Greenwood Street in Primrose Hill on 20 January this year, before he fled the scene and was picked up in a car nearby.

Belbin, of Mitre Street, Huddersfield, was found guilty of manslaughter and possession of an offensive weapon and was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on Thursday.

Cameron Boylan, 20, of Fanny Moor Crescent, who picked Belbin up on Bell Street in the car, was given a two-year suspended sentence after being found guilty of assisting an offender.

During their trial last month, the court heard how Belbin stabbed Kyrell in the chest after the pair had had a disagreement.

He handed himself in to police four days later.

Belbin was told in addition to the 24-year prison term he would serve an extra three years on licence upon release.

Det Ch Insp Stacey Atkinson, who led the investigation, said: "Luke Belbin had armed himself and, judging by the injuries he inflicted on Kyrell, was willing to use a lethal level of violence on others. We hope Kyrell's family can take some comfort from seeing him jailed."

She added: "Kyrell's manslaughter is another devastating example of the tragic consequences of knife crime in our communities."
