Closed down private school put up for sale

A private school which was shut down by its owners earlier this year has been put up for sale by its administrators.

Durham High School was closed in July by Durham Education Ltd which is now in administration.

The school and its wider 14-acre site on South Road has now been put up for sale, according to property firm Sanderson Weatherall. Neil Bestwick, from the company, said the site could be used for education purposes or redeveloped for a "variety of alternative uses".

Durham Education director Yan Gao previously said the consortium was "deeply sorry" for the closure, but some pupils were described as "hugely distressed" by having to move schools at a crucial time in their education.

The school, which received the Sunday Times Independent Secondary School of the Year (North East) award in December 2024, was owned and operated by Durham Education Limited, part of the Chinese-owned Galaxy Global Education Group.

Last year, it announced a decision to move from single-sex to also teaching boys, describing it as part of "exciting plans for its future".
