Memorial service held after boy's river death
South Yorkshire PoliceA memorial service has taken place for an 11-year-old boy who died after going into a South Yorkshire river.
Mackenzie Swift's body was recovered from the River Don on Monday, 48 hours after he was last seen going into the water near Ferry Boat Lane in Mexborough.
A special mass was held at St John the Baptist Church at 09:30 BST and the church is also offering the community a quiet space for reflection.
The Reverend Edward Morrison said: "People have been very concerned, upset and affected and they've found that in this place they've been able to express some of their their sorrow and concern and search for meaning in these difficult times."
Tributes have continued to flood in for the primary school pupil, with flowers being laid at the scene in Mexborough.
Paul Rust, head teacher of Highwoods Academy, which Mackenzie attended, said the school community had been left "heartbroken" following the news.
Phil Bodmer/BBCMr Rust described him as "a kind, caring and sensitive young man", whose "dry sense of humour and laughter brightened our classrooms and playgrounds".
"As an important member of our school, he will always hold a special place in our hearts," said Mr Rust.
"We will remember Mackenzie for the happiness he shared and the smiles he brought to others."
An online fundraiser set up to help Mackenzie's family has so far raised more than £4,500.
Mackenzie's death comes after a number of other water-related fatalities in recent weeks, including three others in Yorkshire.
