Three-weekly bin collections signed off by council
BBCMany people living in the West Northamptonshire Council area will see bin collections for general waste move from fortnightly to every three weeks from next year.
The Reform UK-led council agreed the "1, 2, 3+" system already in place in the Daventry area would extend to homes in Northampton and south Northamptonshire from spring 2027.
The three-weekly collections would only apply to general waste, with recycling bins continuing to be collected fortnightly and food waste weekly.
Residents in flats and other households with communal bins, and people in terraced homes who use sacks for general waste and recycling, will still have collections every week.
Garden waste pick-ups will be unaffected for subscribers.
The local authority said the move would create a "single consistent system" for waste collections, despite thousands of people signing a petition opposing the change.
Nigel Stansfield, cabinet member for environment, recycling and waste, said: "We know that changing waste collections can worry people, and we understand why.
"Our commitment is to work closely with residents to address as many issues as we possibly can. Our focus now will be listening to residents to understand their concerns and put the right support in place before any changes happen.
"We are not starting from scratch. We have real experience from Daventry about the varying needs of residents and we will use this to get it right."
The authority said support would be available for larger households, families with babies and residents with medical needs.
It added that the change would not take place until "residents have been fully engaged on the changes and receive clear information about dates, support available, and how to make the most of food waste and recycling services".
