A memorial to miners who lost their lives at a colliery in Broxtowe has been vandalised - weeks after it was first unveiled.

The tribute was installed at Colliers Wood nature reserve - part of the former Moorgreen Colliery site - next to a board explaining the area's mining history in May.

Broxtowe Borough Council said a member of the public reported the damage on Wednesday, with Nottinghamshire Police contacted as a result.

It said it was "working to clean and repair the site as quickly as possible" and supporting the police with their investigation.

"The vandalism includes one of the memorial plaques being ripped off, while a sticky liquid substance has been poured over two others," the council said.

"Litter was spread across the surrounding area, a speaker was smashed and left nearby, and graffiti was daubed on the adjacent picnic table.

"The cost of replacing the damaged plaque alone is estimated at £110."

The Friends of Colliers Wood, a volunteer group helping to look after the nature reserve, said it was "incredibly disappointed" to see the site has been vandalised.

Any witnesses or anyone with information has been asked to come forward.
