A historic town centre market cross has been demolished after a 4x4 car crashed into it.

Emergency services went to the scene of the incident involving a car and a pedestrian in Howden's Market Place, Humberside Police said.

Pictures from the scene show a silver Range Rover straddled across the structure's base, which dates back to medieval times, with sections of the cross strewn across the ground.

A police spokesperson said there were no reports of any serious injuries as a result of the incident, which happened at about 10:40 BST, and the vehicle had since been recovered.

Howden Market Cross is a Grade II listed structure.

While the base dates back to the medieval period, the upper shaft and cross were carved in 1909.
